Digestive health

Digestive health and food intolerances

The Unsung Hero of Athletic Performance

Digestive issues can be manageable for many years and then exacerbated by stress, dehydration, fuelling errors, and nervous-system activation to the point where it gets embarrassing!

Constipation & Diarrhoea: Understanding Your Gut Signals

Bowel habits are often dismissed as “normal,” even when the gut is struggling. Constipation, loose stools, or alternating patterns can all indicate that digestion, motility, or the microbiome need support even if you manage a visit to the bathroom daily.

At Athlete Sanctuary, we view gut symptoms as meaningful feedback from the body. When the digestive system is moving too slowly or too quickly, it can affect energy, recovery, hormones, immunity, and overall wellbeing.

Common Symptoms

  • bloating or abdominal heaviness
  • nausea
  • cramping or discomfort
  • excessive gas
  • reflux
  • strong reaction to foods
  • fatigue or sluggishness
  • skin breakouts or inflammation
  • hard stools, incomplete motions, or infrequent bowel movements
  • urgency or loose stools often triggered by exercise
  • Many people also describe feeling “puffy,” inflamed, or uncomfortable despite eating well.

Gut symptoms are rarely caused by one factor alone.

Possible contributors include:

  • microbiome imbalances or dysbiosis (imbalance between beneficial and pathogens in the microbiome)
  • low stomach acid or digestive insufficiency
  • dehydration or electrolyte imbalance
  • liver, gallbladder and pancreatic issues
  • stress and nervous‑system dysregulation
  • food intolerances or sensitivities
  • SIBO
  • infections or post‑infectious IBS
  • hormonal fluctuations
  • inconsistent or pro inflammatory diet
  • autoimmune conditions - Coeliac disease, Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s disease
