Iron Deficiency Condition

Low Iron: Your Body's Call for Attention, Not Just a Deficiency

At Athlete Sanctuary, we adopt a holistic, root-cause approach to iron health not just more red meat or iron tablets and in many cases is an early warning that there is a lot more going on under the surface. Our approach to iron deficiency goes far deeper than your ferritin level and dietary intake of iron.

With iron deficiency impacting over 50% of active women and teenage athletes and 13% of male endurance athletes, it’s a widespread issue. For some, iron deficiency is a constant challenge that can persist for years.

Increased training loads, menstrual blood loss, rapid growth phases, and dietary patterns are just part of this complex issue.

Common Symptoms of iron deficiency:

  • Fatigue and unexplained often persistent low energy
  • Breathlessness or reduced exercise tolerance
  • Brain fog and poor concentration
  • Hair thinning
  • Dizziness or headaches
  • Recurrent infections
  • Heavy or irregular periods
  • Anxiety
  • Poor immunity
  • Restless legs and insomnia

Iron deficiency can indicate there is a lot more going on under the surface such as:

  • Gut health - low stomach acid, food intolerances, unresolved gut inflammation, undetected pathogens, undiagnosed gastritis and ulcers, haemorrhoids
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Nutrient interactions
  • Gallbladder and liver issues
  • Women’s health issues
  • Thyroid function
  • Absorption and transport issues
  • Methylation issues
  • And the really obvious - not enough iron intake (supplement choices, dosage, frequency and inadequate dietary intake) to meet the demands of the individual.

Recovering Your Iron Levels

We collaborate with you to uncover the reasons behind iron deficiency, and examine pathology and in-depth functional testing to guide the creation of a sustainable plan tailored to your exercise, nutrition, health issues, and lifestyle.
